The Scenic: Continuity Between Old & New

Kasten Builders is carefully reworking 'The Scenic,' a mid-century modern home in Orinda, California. The project includes a renovation of the existing house and a new 480-square-foot attached ADU. The work is thoughtful and restrained, extending the original home in a way that feels true to the house and the landscape around it.

Site superintendent Ricardo Ceja is leading the self-performed carpentry team, alongside foreman Armando Sanchez and carpenters Mario and Roberto. Their work is central to the project. As the house is rebuilt with new mechanical systems, windows, doors, and interior finishes, their craftsmanship is what allows the old and new to come together in a seamless way.

Material from the original house is being carried into the new work, wrapping parts of the exterior and interior and helping tie the project together visually. It preserves the spirit of the home. It also reflects a thoughtful approach to materials and waste.

As the project takes shape, the contrast between old and new becomes more visible, but the character of the house remains intact. You can see that in the rhythm of the siding, the alignment of the new openings, and the way the windows bring in natural light while strengthening the connection to the landscape.

The attached ADU reads as a natural extension of the home rather than a distinct addition. Deep roof overhangs, aluminum casement windows, and a restrained material palette help it sit comfortably within the overall composition. It stays connected to the original house without drawing unnecessary attention to itself.

The same approach continues inside. With sheetrock in place and the first coats of primer and paint underway, the team is moving into finish carpentry and interior installation. Cabinetry is clean and aligned, with even reveals and precise joinery. Exposed windows and finished surfaces are carefully protected throughout the process, reflecting the discipline behind the work.

The project brings together Feldman Architecture, ZFA Structural Engineers, Studio MALA, and Kasten Builders. The team has worked closely with the client to keep the work aligned with both the design intent and the broader vision for the home. Regular site meetings, clear communication, and careful decision-making have helped move the project forward with consistency. Stay tuned for more updates as the next phase comes into view.
